Chessboard and Linear.

Both help development teams organize work. The useful question is how much of the sprint rhythm you want to automate and what you want to review explicitly.

Comparison checked 2026-10-12 against the linked official documentation. Features and availability can change.

A deliberate sprint review or a repeating cycle

Chessboard keeps sprint selection, capacity review and completion explicit. The team records what happened and chooses which unfinished tasks to include next.

Linear's cycles follow a repeating schedule and generally move unfinished cycle work forward automatically, with documented exceptions. That can suit a team that wants its rhythm to continue with less scheduling work. Read Linear's cycle documentation.

Documents and assistance are shared territory

Chessboard organizes submitted project notes into a four-section draft the team corrects and confirms. The reviewed brief stays alongside the work.

Linear also offers documents, version history and an agent that can use workspace context to create or update work. Document assistance and human review are not unique to Chessboard. Linear documents and Linear Agent explain that scope.

Choose the integration behavior you need

Linear documents GitHub issue synchronization and status automation. Chessboard currently keeps linked observations read-only and task completion controlled by people. Prefer deeper automation when that is important to your team. Linear GitHub integration.

When Chessboard may fit

Linear may fit better if recurring cycles, its wider integration surface and GitHub synchronization are central requirements. We have not run a comparative speed or usability benchmark, and we do not claim complete feature parity.

  • Your team wants to review scope and sprint commitments explicitly.
  • You want per-person capacity to be part of the planning conversation.
  • You prefer to decide which unfinished work carries forward after a retrospective.
